Houseplant Edema: Causes, Treatment & Prevention Guide

After 12 years of diagnosing more than 3,000 indoor plant health cases, we have found that edema is one of the most frequently misdiagnosed houseplant disorders. Plant owners often mistake it for pests or fungal disease when the real cause is a mechanical imbalance between root water uptake and leaf transpiration.

ZZ Plant Care Guide: Light, Water & Rhizome Tips

After growing ZZ plants across offices, low-light apartments, and sun-drenched rooms for over eight years, we have worked out exactly how this rhizome-powered survivor operates — and why the growers who kill it are almost always doing one specific thing wrong.

Fertilizer Burn on Houseplants: Symptoms & Fix Guide

Fertilizer burn is one of the most misdiagnosed houseplant problems because its symptoms — brown tips, wilting, yellowing leaves — are nearly identical to overwatering, underwatering, and root rot. The treatment for root rot is opposite to the treatment for fertilizer burn, which means getting the diagnosis wrong makes the plant worse. This guide is built around that diagnostic problem first.

Troubleshooting Guide

1 Why are my Dendrobium leaves turning yellow and dropping?

Diagnosis: Normal seasonal leaf drop for deciduous types, or overwatering for evergreen types

Treatment: If deciduous, it's normal; if evergreen, reduce watering and allow medium to dry.

Prevention: Know your Dendrobium type; water accordingly.

2 Why isn't my Dendrobium producing flowers?

Diagnosis: Insufficient light or lack of winter rest

Treatment: Provide bright light and a cool, dry rest period in winter to initiate flowering.

Prevention: Give adequate light and seasonal rest.

3 Why are the canes turning yellow and soft?

Diagnosis: Overwatering causing root rot

Treatment: Unpot, trim dead roots, repot in fresh bark; water sparingly.

Prevention: Allow medium to dry between waterings.
